What’s it About? Based on the SpikeTV cartoon, Afro Samurai follows Afro (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) on his quest to claim the No. 1 headband (a WWE-like title belt for the top ninja) and avenge his father’s death (who was killed for the headband). To seek your revenge you must hack and slash your way through gaggles of lesser ninjas and a few level bosses, leaving various dismembered limbs in your wake.
What’s Good About It? We must admit, cutting up ninjas into flailing body parts is pretty fun. Kill enough baddies, and you’ll be able to access your "Focus", which allows you to slow down time and unleash even more pain. Your button-mashing, hack-and-slash adventure will be set to a hot soundtrack, featuring beats from the Wu-Tan Clan’s RZA and voice work from Sam Jackson, Kelly Hu, and Ron Pearlman.
What’s Bad About It? While we found this samurai slasher fun for the first couple levels, Afro Samurai became increasingly frustrating thanks to a difficult camera, awful platforming and repetitive game-play. This adaptation would have been better as a downloadable game via PSN or Xbox Live.
Verdict: 2.5/ 5
