Key rules: Medium sized hen eggs; must be broken one at a time. Hands can be used to steady egg, but cannot be used to pick eggs up.

We also don’t seem to have a big enough table. We can fit 30 eggs on it, sure, but 90? No chance, which means we need to employ a couple of ‘replenishers’ to follow the record attempter round the table, replacing the smashed eggs with unbroken ones. It’s a difficult skill and one that hampers our first contender. Associate Editor Alan Kindell emerges from his minute with a bruised forehead and a barrel-load of regrets – his 70 could have been more.

Which just left work experience guy Alex – a man with youth in his favour, but underfoot conditions were against him (a film of yolk had given the floor the traction of an ice rink). Still, he went for it, head-butting hen’s eggs until Marco cried “Stop!” and made a little box sign. It meant ‘bring me the certificate’. Which meant record breaker. With a total of 103, Alex had both ceased being the ‘the workie’ and started being ‘the world record holder for most eggs smashed by head in one minute’, and answered our question. Yes it really is that easy to break a world record. But you need to pick the right one.
